Washer Fills But Will Not Spin: Causes and Fixes
A washer that fills with water but won't spin usually has an unbalanced load, a lid/door switch fault, or a worn drive belt or motor coupling.

The belt connecting the motor to the transmission (which drives both agitation and spin on many machines) can slip, stretch, or break, cutting off agitation specifically if it disconnects at the wrong point in its travel.
3. Motor coupling failure
On direct-drive machines, a worn motor coupling can fail in a way that affects agitation while leaving other functions partially working, or vice versa.
4. Control board not sending the agitate signal
Less commonly, a control board fault can mean the machine simply never commands agitation to start, even though the fill and later stages proceed normally.
Test the agitator by hand (top-load)
With power off, remove the agitator's softener cap and center bolt cover, then try rotating the agitator both directions to check if the ratcheting dogs are gripping as expected.
Inspect the drive belt
Access the belt (location varies by model — often behind a rear or bottom panel) and check for visible slack, cracking, or a belt that's slipped off its pulley.
Replace worn agitator dogs or a bad belt
Both are defined, commonly available parts. Agitator dog kits are usually straightforward; belt replacement involves more disassembly and correct tensioning.
Test a full cycle
After repairs, run a normal cycle and confirm agitation, drain, and spin all work through a complete cycle.
