Why Is My Washing Machine Not Draining?
A washing machine that won't drain is almost always a clog, a kinked hose, or a faulty drain pump. Here's how to find out which and fix it.
Short answer: A hum during the drain stage means the pump motor is receiving power and trying to spin — the electrical side is fine. The water isn't leaving because something mechanical is stopping it: most often a foreign object jammed in the pump impeller, less often a seized pump bearing.
1. Foreign object jammed in the pump impeller
Coins, buttons, bra underwires, and small toys are the classic culprits — they lodge in the pump's impeller blades and physically block it from spinning even though the motor is trying.
2. Impeller disconnected or broken
On some models the plastic impeller can crack or slip off its shaft with age, so the motor spins freely (or hums against resistance) without actually moving water.
3. Seized or worn pump bearing
Years of use can wear out the bearing the pump motor spins on, causing it to strain and hum under load instead of turning smoothly.
4. Pump motor nearing failure
If nothing is jammed and the bearing is fine, the pump motor itself may be weak or failing, humming as it tries and fails to reach full speed.
Unplug the machine first
Disconnect power completely before opening the filter or pump access panel — the pump can still be live even mid-cycle.
Open the pump filter and inspect the impeller
Behind the small round filter cap (see our not-draining guide for the exact access point), you can often see or reach the impeller directly. Remove any visible foreign object by hand.
Spin the impeller by hand
With power off, try turning the impeller with your fingers or a small tool. It should move smoothly; heavy resistance or grinding suggests a worn bearing rather than a simple jam.
Reassemble and test
Once clear, close the filter, restore power, and run a drain-only or spin cycle to confirm the hum is gone and water clears normally.

Always unplug the washing machine before opening any panel or reaching near the pump. If the pump motor needs replacement, this involves electrical connections best left to a qualified technician.Not necessarily — a hum most often means the motor is fine electrically but is mechanically blocked, usually by something jammed in the impeller. Stop and investigate instead. Running a motor that's straining against a jam repeatedly can overheat and shorten its life, turning an easy fix into a full pump replacement.
