Short answer: Cold at the bottom, warm at the top is the classic sign of sludge (rust and mineral debris) settled at the base of the radiator, blocking water flow through the lower section. A power flush or radiator removal-and-flush usually resolves it.
1. Sludge buildup at the base
Over years, rust particles and mineral debris circulate through a heating system and settle at the lowest points, which is usually the bottom of each radiator.
2. Trapped air (less likely for this specific pattern)
Trapped air typically causes the opposite pattern — cold at the top, warm at the bottom — but is worth ruling out with a bleed check regardless.
3. A closing or partially blocked valve
If the radiator's flow or return valve is only partly open, water circulation through the whole unit can be restricted unevenly.
Rule out trapped air first
Use a radiator bleed key on the small valve at the top corner to release any trapped air — if the pattern was actually air-related, this alone may fix it.
Check both valves are open
Confirm the manual valve and the lockshield valve at the base of the radiator are both fully open, not partially closed.
Try a simple flush if sludge is suspected
For a single problem radiator, turning off both valves, disconnecting it, and flushing it out over a bath or outdoors with a hose can clear moderate sludge.
Reconnect and test
Reattach the radiator, reopen both valves slowly, bleed any air introduced during reconnection, and check that heat now reaches the full height evenly.
Consider a whole-system power flush for multiple radiators
If several radiators in the house show the same cold-bottom pattern, sludge is likely widespread through the system, and a professional power flush is more effective than treating radiators individually.

Central heating systems can be pressurized and contain hot water. If you're not familiar with safely isolating and draining a radiator, or your system uses an unfamiliar valve type, have a qualified heating engineer handle it instead.Cold at the top usually means trapped air, fixed by bleeding the radiator.
