Why Does My Microwave Spark?
Sparking (arcing) inside a microwave is almost always caused by metal, a worn waveguide cover, or grease buildup — and it means stop using it immediately.
Short answer: If the display lights up, the turntable spins, and the timer counts down normally but food stays cold, the magnetron (the component that actually generates microwave energy) has very likely failed. A faulty door switch or a blown high-voltage fuse are the other common causes.
1. Failed magnetron
The magnetron generates the microwave energy that actually heats food. It's a sealed component that simply wears out after years of use, and when it fails, everything else in the microwave keeps working normally except heating.
2. Faulty door switch (interlock)
Microwaves have multiple safety switches that must all confirm the door is closed before allowing the magnetron to run. If one has failed, the unit can appear to run normally while the magnetron is prevented from activating.
3. Blown high-voltage fuse
This fuse protects the high-voltage circuit that powers the magnetron. If it's blown, the rest of the microwave can operate normally while the heating circuit is completely dead.
4. Failed high-voltage diode or capacitor
These components convert power for the magnetron. A failure here can also stop heating while leaving the display, light, and turntable unaffected.
Confirm the fault with a simple water test
Microwave a mug of water for 30 seconds and check if it's warmed at all — no change in temperature confirms a heating-circuit fault rather than a minor performance issue.
Check the door is latching fully
Open and firmly close the door, confirming it latches securely — a door that doesn't latch fully can prevent the magnetron from running as a safety measure.
Stop using the unit and unplug it
Once a heating fault is confirmed, unplug the microwave and don't continue using it — running a countertop microwave with a magnetron or high-voltage fault isn't something to keep testing at home.
Arrange professional diagnosis or replacement
Have a qualified appliance technician diagnose which specific high-voltage component has failed, or weigh repair cost against replacement — magnetron replacement is often comparable in cost to a new mid-range microwave.

Never open a microwave's outer casing. The high-voltage capacitor inside can store a dangerous electrical charge even when the unit is unplugged and can cause serious injury. Diagnosis and repair of the magnetron, capacitor, or high-voltage circuit should only be performed by a qualified appliance technician.It depends on the unit's age and the repair quote — magnetron replacement can cost a meaningful fraction of a new microwave's price, so for an older unit, replacement is often more practical than repair.

The display, turntable motor, and light run on entirely separate low-voltage circuits from the high-voltage circuit that powers the magnetron, so one can fail while the others keep working normally.
