Why Does My Oven Take So Long to Preheat?
A slow-to-preheat oven usually points to a weakening heating element, a door seal leaking heat, or a miscalibrated temperature sensor.
Short answer: An oven that runs hot or cold compared to its dial setting usually needs a thermostat recalibration, which most ovens support through a hidden menu — no parts needed. A failing heating element is the next most common cause.
1. Thermostat drift
Oven thermostats can drift a few degrees off over years of use, which is a normal, fixable calibration issue rather than a fault.
2. Failing bake or broil element
A visibly warped, blistered, or arcing heating element isn't producing consistent heat and needs replacement.
3. Faulty temperature sensor (oven probe)
The small sensor rod inside the oven cavity reports temperature to the control board. If it's touching the oven wall or has failed, readings become inaccurate.
4. Door seal not sealing properly
A worn or torn door gasket lets heat escape, so the oven has to work harder and can undershoot the set temperature.
Verify the discrepancy with an oven thermometer
Set the oven to 350°F (175°C), let it fully preheat, and compare the thermometer reading after 15 minutes.
Recalibrate the thermostat
Most ovens have a hidden calibration setting accessible by holding specific buttons (check your manual) that lets you adjust the displayed temperature up or down by a set number of degrees.
Re-test after calibrating
Repeat the thermometer test to confirm the adjustment brought the actual temperature in line with the setting.
Inspect elements and sensor if calibration doesn't help
If the gap remains large even after calibration, visually check the heating elements and sensor position as described in the safe checks above.

For gas ovens, never attempt to repair or adjust the burner or gas supply components yourself. If you smell gas, leave immediately and call your gas utility or a licensed technician from a safe location.Most manufacturers allow adjustments of up to 35°F (about 20°C) in either direction.
