Why Is My Oven Not Heating to the Right Temperature?
If food is consistently under- or over-cooked, your oven's thermostat calibration or heating element is usually the cause — and both are checkable at home.
Short answer: Most ovens should reach 350°F (175°C) in 10–15 minutes. If yours regularly takes noticeably longer, the most common causes are a weakening bake element, heat escaping through a worn door seal, or a temperature sensor reporting a false 'reached temperature' reading late.
1. Weakening bake element
Electric ovens' heating elements lose efficiency gradually as they age, taking longer to reach the same temperature even without an obvious visible fault.
2. Worn door seal
A torn, flattened, or dirty door gasket lets heat escape continuously, forcing the oven to work harder and longer to reach and hold temperature.
3. Sensor or thermostat drift
The temperature sensor can drift out of calibration over time, causing the oven to either genuinely take longer or simply report 'preheated' inaccurately.
4. Igniter taking longer to reach full temperature (gas ovens)
A weakening igniter in a gas oven can take longer to get hot enough to open the gas valve, extending the time before the burner even lights consistently.
Verify with an independent thermometer
Place an oven thermometer on the center rack, start a preheat to a standard temperature, and time how long it actually takes to reach it — this confirms whether there's a real issue or just an inaccurate display.
Inspect and clean the door seal
Wipe down the gasket to remove grease or debris that could be preventing a full seal, and check for any visible gaps when the door is closed.
Check the bake element
Look for visible damage on an electric oven's heating element — warping, blistering, or dark spots indicate it's failing and should be replaced.
Recalibrate the thermostat
Most ovens have a hidden calibration menu (check your manual) that can correct a sensor reporting temperature inaccurately, which sometimes resolves an apparent slow-preheat complaint.
